Ringing filled her ears. The tinnitus and permanent hearing loss from Sootopolis followed her, but she could forget it with a good distraction. Her skirmish out on route 102 had taught her that she had to keep moving and keep fighting if she wanted to avoid the ringing. Taught her a few other things, too. [break][break]

And it led her to Noah's door. [break][break]

"Yo!" She barged into his gym with little decorum. "It's ya girl!" She had a bag slung over her shoulder and a big grin fixed on her face. She made a show of inspecting the inside of his gym. "Would make good Guzzlord food, y'know." [break][break]

She reached into her bag to pull out a doodle. "I drew this for you after our trip to Lesser Megalopolis, by the way. You can frame it on the wall here." She held it out in her bandaged hand with pride. He'd accepted her challenge, and she'd graciously brought him a present. She didn't think about how it was one of the only things she'd salvaged from her room in Dewford.

Her face is a mask of disbelief as he throws the doodle back at her - metaphorically. "I - no! You were talking about, like, being a little Guzzlord snack! I simply fulfilled your vision." Heat colors her cheeks, but she meets his eyes in defiance of her embarrassment. [break][break]

"All this fighting with Rocket has taught me something important, so I'm not going to lose today." Her grin is self-assured, her confidence back in full measure. "How much you try won't change this W I'm about to take." She puts her hands on her hips besides the belt with three pokeballs, though only two are permitted for the challenge. "By the way, you're definitely going in my victory selfie today." It'd complement the one they'd taken at Lesser Megalopolis.

"whether the outcome, this doodle's the real winner. it's going up on my office wall or reception's."[break][break]

noah sweeps aside his joking. with a free hand, he pats the two pokeballs readied on his holsters, their metal plating clacking cleanly against his palms.[break][break]

"but i get you. i feel your resolve. and that excites me robin." noah places the doodle behind the receptionist's counter, and it is swiftly stored safe and sound... though the employee seems bewildered at the artwork. "show me what you got, alright?"[break][break]

noah guides her to a pair of heavy doors. they are opened by a gym trainer who bows as they pass by them. a long hallway, lit on either side, like a dramatic passage of a wrestler's arrival, leads them to the caged ring that is to be their battlefield.[break][break]

As he insists the doodle is the real winner, she sticks up a finger and wags it. "Don't you dilute my victory, Mr. Faber." Part of her excitement stems from the pure fun it is to fight outside of a life-or-death situation, something she hasn't felt in months except for her battle against Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki - but that had resulted in a loss because she didn't have the knowledge she had now. [break][break]

"I'll show you," she promises with a smile more genuine than mocking. The caged ring is enticing. It's enclosed enough that Klefki's propensity to float won't protect it from the assault of his combative pokemon; she hadn't realized just how close their pokemon would be, but there's no need to hide, here. Whatever happens is fated. [break][break]

And she already coached her chosen duo plenty to make sure they were prepared for this fight. [break][break]

She releases her Type: Null - rescued by her own hands with the help of Gwendolyn Conway - and Klefki to enter the ring. When Noah's team enters the ring, she adds, "Nervous? I'm a seasoned gym veteran by now. This is my fifth battle." She wiggles five fingers at him for emphasis. "I've learned the opening gambit is everything, and we've been practicing."[break][break]

She claps her hands together excitedly, the sound muffled by the bandages on her right hand. "Are you ready to see it?"

noah reaches the other side of the cage. on his elevated podium, the gym leader stands with knees bent. in either hand his pokeballs wait like sprinters in bullet start, eager to pounce.[break][break]

stage lights pierce through the chain link fencing like javelins. the canvas awaits the confrontation.[break][break]

"oh i'm ready." the bandages again. noah takes a breath and closes his eyes. when they open, he throws the capsules hard.[break][break]

they clatter against the fencing before cracking open. red bolts of light arc into the ring and shed away to reveal his URSHIFU and a marching unit of FALINKS.[break][break]

"show me what you got!"[break][break]

his pokemon lunge forth when the ring bell rings.

His pokemon are already fired-up. Klefki knows what to do and charges bravely, though he chooses the smaller of the two opponents. "Rough him up!" He plays rough with Falinks, disconnecting his key-ring arms to better batter the marching pokemon. [break][break]

Urshifu is a scarier threat, and she had been certain the big lug would be present. If she thought the bear was shakable, she'd be trying to distract him like the Lilycove Liepards' fans try to distract the Mauville Mankeys during a game in the Mauville stadium. Instead, she settles for trying to distract Noah. "I talked to Councilwoman freya morningstar about you, y'know." The tone is suspiciously serious, genuine. [break][break]

Then: "We decided your new Thing should be wearing Crocs because your taste in shoes is kinda mid."[break][break]

Type: Null doesn't need Robin's help to make decisions, and it's always been a rather independent (and angry) companion, so it sizes up Urshifu and makes a scary face to throw it off its game. There's too little distance in the confines of the cage, so it needs a slower opponent for better maneuverability.

"whoa, whoa, them's fighting words!" noah barks and raises a shoe. "limited editions! just for this!"[break][break]

after klefki's PLAY ROUGH, several falinks units roll about like bowling pins. but not all have been scattered. the red-crested soldiers still on their kimbap-shaped feet huddle together and march in place.[break][break]

"i know you're trying to distract me." the gym leader says. "but i've gone through too much to be thrown off-guard by clowns!"[break][break]

his urshifu growls as the SCARY FACE slows its approach. the bear grabs the lead falinks unit, the brass with its grand red horn. like a rock hard dodgeball, the bear launches the leader horn-first toward the TYPE:NULL.[break][break]

the falinks leader's horn glows citrine-green as it attempts to FIRST IMPRESSION. making up for its slowed gait, the bear follows suit, ignoring the klefki as it barrels a powerful WICKED BLOW punch right behind.

"The - are you calling me a clown!?" Her voice hits something screechy at the unexpected indignation. How dare he? She was going to shave his head when he least expected it. Let's see how bold he could be when he was bald. [break][break]

It's her first time seeing Falinks in battle, so she had no idea they could do the disconnect thing that they do. Worse still, she hadn't forseen Urshifu pelting one of them. Type: Null squeaks underneath the dunk of the Falink body, but it shakes its head and re-focuses, angling its body to make Urshifu's strike more of a glancing blow than a square hit. [break][break]

Her ears ring, the tinnitus covering the sounds of battle with a thick blanket. She doesn't let the ghost of Sootoplis stop her from showing Noah just how much she's been practicing. Robin doesn't predict Null will do well in such close-quarters with Urshifu, so she shouts, "Create some distance!" [break][break]

Klefki abides, using fairy wind to discourage the Urshifu from getting close to Type: Null. Null is smarted from the Falinks projectile and climbs the cage wall to get enough height for aerial ace on the Falinks as revenge. [break][break]

She can't pull her eyes from his unusual pokemon. "Where do you even find a Falinks?"

the FAIRY WIND batters noah's bear. growling, the ursine raises its furry arms while the gales blow past and through the chain-link fencing. noah's hair parts from the winds and exposes the excitement in his eyes.[break][break]

"not the circus, let me tell you that much!" noah's grin grows wider—but it is not just from his continual jesting. witnessing robin and her pokemon utilize the walls to their advantage ticks a checkbox for her assessment. "counter!"[break][break]

his falinks gather just in time for type:null's AERIAL ACE. the blow lands, forcing each unit's glowing eyes to cinch. a COUNTER attempts to launch the chimera back.[break][break]

"Unprofessional!" She near-shrieks at the circus comment. Falinks is an enemy she shouldn't have underestimated: his counter is perfectly timed and throws Null into the cage with no mercy. "Holy 'karp," she breathes out. She really should've invested in some sort of healing move between her two pokemon. Null's dizzy from the strike, clearly on his last vestiges of strength after such a move. She needs to knock one of Noah's pokemon out before she's down a teammate herself. [break][break]

Null looks vengeful, but she's less confident about their capacity to remove Falinks from the battle now. "Focus the 'fu," she orders, and Klefki's already in motion. He uses fairy lock to try and hold Urshifu in place. Null switches focus with only slight hesitation, launching tri attack at the Urshifu. If they can't faint him, hopefully it'll paralyze or freeze him, and give them more opportunity to double team one of Noah's pokemon. [break][break]

"The League's absolutely banning Falinks in the next tournament set." She makes an x symbol with her arms. "Pretty sure that thing's an alien. Or an ultra beast. I've never seen a HINT of that thing in the real world." She wants to avoid seeing it again, the little marching freak. "I think you shoulda done TWO Urshifus."

his urshifu lunges forth, first first: each thick knuckle transforms the punch into a fierce crown palisado. but the punch does not move any further. restrained in fae-pink, the urshifu bares a frustrated fang before being struck by a TRI-ATTACK.[break][break]

ice crawls up the bear's limbs before completely encasing the ursine whole.[break][break]

"take the klefki down, falinks! don't let her words get to you!"[break][break]

the falinks scurry across the canvas. their toadstool feet march with martial haste before launching themselves with rapid succession. unit after unit is thrown at the klefki for a rough cascade of HEADBUTTS.[break][break]
